Christmas on Safari

Happy New Year everyone!! It’s our first day home after returning from a very eventful ‘Winter Break’ in Tanzania and after spending pretty much the full two weeks sleeping in a tent, I’m fairly certain that we need another vacation to recover from our trip. Our original plan was to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, followed by a five day safari to the Serengeti, but upon arrival, we discovered that our bags hadn’t arrived. Since they had our hiking boots and all of our warm clothes, this posed a bit of a problem for climbing up a mountain. Luckily, we were able to arrange to do the safari first and after stocking up on some essentials to get by, we headed out to discover some of Africa’s amazing animals.

Mike was like a kid in a candy store with his camera - in five days he racked up over 1000 shots so you can see just how excited he was during this safari. We were lucky to see just about every major animal and some up very closely:

Water Buffalo

Hyenas

Thousands and thousands of wildebeest (they were migrating)

Zebras

Leopards

Hippos

Lions - this one is beside the wildebeest that it killed, we also saw a pride of about 12 lionesses

Giraffes

Baboons - these ones were transporting their little babies

Vervet monkies - yes you will notice that they have bright blue balls

Impala

Elephants - this one actually came right up to the water tank in our camp to have a drink

And black rhinos - we were very lucky to see two doing it 'rhino style'. This is a good think since they are an endangered species.

Updates from our climb up Kilimanjaro to come......

  1. That safari looks fantastic! Mike, I have to say, with that beard going and your ginger colour, you look you could be the guy running the safari!

  2. So, yeah..you guys know how to make some lemonade from your lemons! Did you ever get your luggage back? These pics (especially the award-winning zebra number) are AMAZING! Did they let you pet the lions? :) Can't wait to talk to you guys. When's our next Skype date? Happy New Year...Happy Birthday, Mavis!

  5. I have to agree! It appears as though you may have some work to do on those poor monkeys with blue balls! Looks like you are both having an amazing adventure over there. All the best
